2009 Girls LX
Hi All,
Below you will find a list of summer umpiring opportunities that we are doing the umpire scheduling for. Please let us know if you think you will be interested in working any of these tournaments and which ones you are interested in. We realize that summer is quite a bit off but we want to get organized. There will be no problem if you tell us that you are interested and then when we contact you about a month before the tournament and you are not available. By saying that you are interested you will be the first officials who will be contacted to work the tournament. Also if you worked a particular tournament last year you will get priority to work it this year if we have to limit our umpire roster.
Pay this year will be $35 per ref hour and we will schedule you in blocks of time(as we have in the past) and are willing to work with you to schedule you around and team that you wish to watch or coach.
Thanks in advance,
Bonnye and Ali
Please pass this email on to any umpire you may feel would be interested.

umpiring signals FH
Updated on January 22, 2009
While only the official signals are to be used (described below, with videos clips when possible), umpires can and are encouraged to develop a personal style/flair in their delivery. There is, however, little leeway in the final position of the arms and hands in each signal.
With the exception of signaling advantage or "play on", it is preferable to be stationary when giving a signal. Directional signals must not be made across the body—always keep your chest facing the players and reach away from your body to signal direction. Unless described otherwise, the hands should be open, with all fingers extended and together.
It is bad practice to look away from the players when a signal is made; further offences might be missed, concentration can be lost, and this can be interpreted as a lack of confidence even when the umpire is completely certain of his or her decision.
Here is the categorized list and description of the signals used by umpires from the Rules of Hockey and the Rules of Indoor Hockey.
NOTE: USA Field Hockey is producing videos to supplement the narrative description of each signal (some are already available, click the link after each description). As soon as a signal video is completed, it will be added to the site. In the meantime, please enjoy the video links below.
Timing:
Start time: turn towards the other umpire with one arm straight up in the air ( time in )
Stop time: turn towards the other umpire and cross fully-extended arms at the wrists above the head ( time out )
Two minutes of play remaining: raise both hands straight up in the air with pointing index fingers ( two minutes )
One minute of play remaining: raise one hand straight up in the air with pointing index finger ( one minute )
Ball out of play:
Over the side-line: indicate the direction with one arm raised horizontally ( side-in )
Over the back-line by an attacker: face the center of the field and extend both arms horizontally sideways ( hit-in / push-in )
Over the back-line unintentionally by a defender (indoor): face the center of the field and extend both arms horizontally sideways
Over the back-line unintentionally by a defender (outdoor): point one arm at the corner flag nearest where the ball crossed the back-line
Bully:
Move hands alternately up and down in front of the body with palms facing each other ( bully ) [ special version ]
Goal scored:
Point both arms horizontally towards the center of the field
Conduct of play:
Dangerous play: place one forearm diagonally across the chest ( danger )
Misconduct and/or bad temper: stop play and make a calming movement by moving both hands slowly up and down, palms downward, in front of the body
Kick: slightly raise a leg and touch it near the foot or ankle with the hand
Raised ball: hold palms facing each other horizontally in front of the body, with one palm approximately 150 mm above the other
Obstruction: hold crossed forearms in front of the chest
Third party or shadow obstruction: alternately open and close crossed forearms in front of the chest ( third party )
Stick obstruction: hold one arm out and downwards in front of the body half-way between vertical and horizontal; touch the forearm with the other hand
Five (5) meters distance: extend one arm straight up in the air showing an open hand with all fingers extended
However, if a goalie stick APPEARS to be close to the legal limit of 48" long, you should measure it with a tape measure. If it is too long, the player may not play with it until the length has been adjusted to meet specifiactions. The stick would give her a unfair advantage for that game so telling her to get it fixed by next time is incorrect procedure.
1. __The goalkeeper has been penalized for dangerous play and is 4m behind the offensive player awarded the free position. The goal circle remains empty and the arc had been cleared. When the whistle blows to start the play, the offense shoots a bounce shot. A defender stops the shot by reaching into the goal circle with her crosse. If this is legal the answer is true and if this is illegal the answer is false.
2. __You must end the scoring play immediately in all of the following situations:
-Check to the head
-Shooting space
-Illegal Deputy
3. __The lead official is primarily responsible for identifying and calling dangerous follow through.
4. __If the goalkeeper is outside the goal circle and the foul occurs within the critical scoring area, but outside the 8 meter arc, she may only return to the goal circle if she is within the penalty land and the lane is to be cleared.
5. __A free position is awarded to the offense, Gold, on an 8 meter hash mark because Red, the defense was in shooting space. Upon giving Gold the ball to set up the 8 meter free position, the lead official notices some lovely ear rings on the Gold player who was fouled and is receiving the free position. The proper call is a change of possession, ball to red at the 8 m.
6. __The goalie steps out of the goal circle to defend a shot (she is not in shooting space) and the ball bounces off her body. She made no attempt to play the ball with her stick and this happened once earlier in the game. Major foul on the goalie and she goes 4 meters behind the free position on the 8 meter.
7. __When a player is running to receive a pass, a blind side defender does not have to give her enough time and space to change direction.
8. __Holding the cross of a player in possession of the ball is a minor foul.
9. __The trail official is responsible for goal circle violations and shooting space on the other side of the 8 meter arc.
10. __A player may run out of bounds and re-enter in a more advantageous position as long as her feet were in when she contacted the ball and their was no body contact.
Rules test questions we missed: #19 ANY player can call a TO; # 36 players who have been warned about mouth guards should get a yellow card (we all agreed!); #77 retake stroke if both players accidentally move; #83 penalty corner was already awarded, so play it out after the card; #89 if a coach is given a red card, you do not remove a field player; #93 signal for stick interference is a ‘chopping’ motion, not a ‘clapping’ motion
- Giving signals- give direction first, then define the foul for players and coaches with the proper signal
- Obstruction- opposing player has to make an attempt to get the ball for the foul to occur, otherwise no foul, see p.71 there is no obstruction if the player with the ball moves away from tackler
